State Mottos.

State mottos reflect the character and beliefs of the citizens in that partiuclar state, or more accurately, of the citizens who were present when it was adopted. Many of the states do not have official mottos, but sayings taken from the official seal and in turn accepted as state mottos.
A large number of state mottos are written in Latin and the others in English; 25 and 21 respectively. The other five state mottos include, Hawaiis (written in Hawaiian), Californias (Greek), Minnesotas (French), Montanas (Spanish) and Washingtons (Chinook Jargon - which is a language which spreadly largely in the 1800's in the Pacific NorthWest).
Florida adopted the nations motto as their own ; "In God we Trust" and again is on their state seal.
I feel that quite a large number of the state mottos are representing the direction in which Americans want their nation to be heading. For example, Vermonts "Freedom & Unity", Pennslyvanias "Virture, Liberty & Independence", North Dakotas "Liberty & Union, Now & Forever, One & Inseperable" and Alaskas "North to the Future". A large majority of the mottos repeat the same words, such as Liberty and Unity which I think shows what the United States stand for as a nation.
Other mottos I believe, are there to remind Americans what living in that state means. Texas' "Friendship", Wyomings "Equal Rights" and Rhode Islands "Hope".
More state mottos seem to be inspiring their citizens in achieving and remembering their abilties. Although they could also be encouraging Americans to be standing together and to encourage America as a country to achieve things.
So states such as North Carolina ("To be rather than to seem"), Oregon ("She flies with her own wings"), Maine ("I direct") and New Hampshire ("Live Free or Die") all have thought-evoking mottos.
All in all, the state mottos are that of individuality, inspiration and independence, which for me, represents America.
